5 Free iPad Apps for Photo Editing

When I got my iPad, I was thrilled about finally being able to conveniently and comfortably read my eBooks (try lying around and reading one using those ancient, clunky IBM ThinkPads. Go on now, try it. I dare you.)

It never fails to amaze me, all the other wonderful stuff I can do with this amazing piece of technology.

There are apps for everything under the sun, from maps of the Chatuchak market in Bangkok, to Jillian Michaels getting you off your lazy, flabby bottom and whipping you into the fit and fine person you were meant to be (well trying to anyway, there’s only so much an app can do.)

For us amateur photographers, there are several free Photo Editing apps which are fairly easy to use. Try out the 5 below and let me know what you think:

1. Snapseed by Nik Software, Inc.

Snapseed’s interface is simple and clear, yet it packs in a lot of power and in-depth detail…

…The app adroitly handles photo-fixing basics such as brightness, contrast, cropping, and straightening…

…Special effects include Drama, Grunge, vintage, center focus, frames, and “tilt shift”—a popular technique that gives photos a miniaturized look. These go far beyond what you get in Instagram and Hipstamatic…

…Snapseed offers one of the hottest effects in digital photography today—”tilt shift.” I use quotation marks, because, although this is the popular term for the miniaturization and saturation technique, tilt-shift is actually a geometry effect only possible with expensive lenses. Snapseed lets you choose an elliptical or linear focus area for the effect, and the results can be impressive…

…Snapseed lets you share your photo creations directly to your iPhone library, send it in an email, or upload it to Flickr, Facebook, or Twitter…

…if you really want to perfect and create with your iPad photographs, then Snapseed is the best choice, and an Editors’ Choice for photo editing on the iPad.”

It used to cost $4.99 but now it’s free (Yay!). I love how they explain the features to guide newbies.

2. PhotoToaster Jr. by East Coast Pixels, Inc.

This app was released to give one and all an idea about what the $ 1.99 senior PhotoToaster is capable of. If you haven’t already purchased the paid version, give the free one a try and see if it’s something worth buying.

PhotoToaster provides a deep toolbox of photo corrections, then adds fast non-destructive image adjustments and provides three different ways to adjust them. The Toaster can do everything from crop, simple lighting adjustments and color corrections to elaborate multi-layer composite effects and noise reduction.

3. Adobe Photoshop Express

PS Express offers a small set of fun and useful photo editing tools with an easy-to-understand user interface. It also works with built-in cameras on the iPhone and iPod touch, and the Photoshop.com online photo service.

4. ColorBlast Lite by East Coast Pixels, Inc.

The core feature of ColorBlast is the ability to separate and color one object in an otherwise black and white photo. To make this possible, and even fun, ColorBlast employs selective color technology which allows you to start brushing on a specified color and then paint only that color. This means that you can brush right over the edge of an object without causing overpainting of other colors.

The video will clarify what this app can really do!

So that’s how they did it! I’ve always just stared in amazement at the black and white facebook pics with bits of bright color. I must have discovered this app very late in the game (*sniff).

5. BeFunky Photo Editor for iPad by BeFunky

Want to go beyond basic editing? BeFunky does include some basics, but also sports a fun collection of over two dozen filters, effects and frames to punch up your photos. No ads or registrations to distract from your photo experience. Share directly to Facebook and Flickr from within the app.

They were not kidding when they named the app BeFunky. Check out this video review and see for yourself.

Truth be told, I’ve always been wary of doing anything with my photos (in case I can’t undo a moustache on my mother-in-law’s face, *snicker). But I’m having so much fun playing around with all these apps, I’m on my way to changing my noob status. Wish me luck, better yet, join me!
